In the midst of globalization, how do we, as women workers, defend our rights and build sustainable communities rooted in justice and human dignity?
Since opening its doors on February 2, 2001, Café Mayapan strives to promote traditional, healthy Mexican cuisine by using ingredients native to the Americas, becoming an attraction for locals and tourists alike. It also has become a popular events venue and catering company for dozens of area organizations. As a social enterprise, Café Mayapan has emerged as a viable business with a sound social purpose: providing jobs, training and experience for low-income women workers of all ages; contributing to the local economy through its payroll and contracts with local vendors; and helping to revitalize the depressed South Central neighborhood. Also, as of March 2012, Centro Mayapan began participating in a new ecological project. Rather than just dumping its green “waste,” the Mercado has re-routed over 300 lbs. of compost to local community gardens!
